PlayStation 4 begins to wind down in Japan

Sony is beginning to wind down availability of the PS4 in Japan by discontinuing all but one model.

Only the PS4 Slim will remain available for sale, while all other models have been discontinued as of January 5th of this year.

Despite being a stellar success globally, the console has not fared as well in its native country. Only about 9.3 million units shipped across its lifetime according to VGChartz, making it the second worst selling PlayStation system. Only the PS Vita sold fewer, at about 5 million units.

Sony has not said whether they will be discontinuing the PS4 for global markets. Both the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim are still in production, and available at retail for those handful of late adopters who can’t find, or can’t be bothered to grab a next gen system.

The PS4 is Sony’s second best selling PlayStation, and the fourth best selling video game system of all time, pushing 114 million consoles globally since it released in late 2013.
