shutterstock_14911939I’ve come back from vacation with yet more developing news on the eighth generation consoles. This week we’re learning a little more about how you’ll be able to share your gameplay videos. Unfortunately, you have to pay to let’s play. The Game DVR feature along with Skype will both require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. It may not be a big expense, but it’s a little disheartening to hear. It seems Microsoft is keen to put most of their online features behind the golden paywall.

This has been a common criticism about the Xbox Live service for years now. Premium entertainment apps like Netflix have always required a Gold subscription on top of their regular monthly fees. These apps are free on all other major gaming platforms. It’s quite curious that they’re doing this, as it screams cash grab. I guess it’s because casual gamers have little interest in playing online matches, so they need some other incentive to go Gold. This news just adds more to your pain in the wallet.

Naturally, Sony has jumped up and stated their own game streaming and sharing service will not require Playstation Plus. The PS4’s new paywall will only be required for online play. Sony has also confirmed that the you will be able to record up to 15 minutes worth of gameplay at a time, which can then be edited and uploaded. Here’s hoping that video can also be shared with your local desktop so we can start making some proper review clips.
