Valve has announced they will be pulling paid mods from the Steam Workshop, and that gamers will be refunded their money.

In a message to members, company representative Alden Kroll admitted that they did not know what they were getting themselves into.

“We’ve been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they’ve been received well. It’s obvious now that this case is different,” he said.

Kroll went on to say the company missed the mark, and that wading into Skyrim’s established community was a bad place to start.

Valve launched the project unexpectedly late last week as a way to encourage the community to produce higher quality mods.

After a few days of anarchy, it became clear that things were not exactly well thought out.

Gamers were upset about having to pay for things that used to be free.

Modders were outraged after several unscrupulous people were caught stealing and charging for work that wasn’t theirs. Bethesda’s 75% cut also raised some eyebrows.

Both companies mutually agreed to end the program before more damage could be done.

Valve has not ruled out paid mods for future games.
