iOS apps can now tip the scales at a whopping 4 gigabytes.

Apple sent out a message to their development community, saying they have decided to double the maximum size of their binaries.

Originally, apps could be now bigger than 2GB. A limit which was put in place when iOS was first launched way back in 2007.

This doesn’t mean a whole lot for everyday apps, but it should be welcome news for game developers.

As mobile computing power has increased, games have not kept up in the visual department. Largely due to the artificial size limitations, which means lower resolution textures and less overall detail.

Of course, if you bought a 16GB phone or tablet, you may not be liking this news as much. Minimum storage on Apple’s lower end phones hasn’t increased in years, and these larger apps may just be too big.
