If you’re excited for the new Mario game, you won’t have to wait long. Except, we don’t even know what platform it’s going to release on.

Amoungst the brouhaha over the latest Smash Bros game this past week, Nintendo EAD confirmed they are working on the next game in the Mario series. However, they did not say whether it would be on the 3DS or Wii U. Nintendo producer Yoshiaki Koizumi told EDGE Magazine “That’s still a secret! I can tell you, though, that we’ve already started approaching our next challenge.”

Now is probably not the best time for secrets, given the way things are going. At this point, fans of Nintendo’s latest console have quite a few games featuring the mustachioed plumber. Mostly 2D platformers tapping into the nostalgia market. What gamers are really looking for is the successor to Mario Galaxy, and other flagship titles in the series. Something that can really show what the Wii U is capable of, rather than rehashing old concepts. Nintendo has said they are looking to make better use of the Wii U’s gamepad for the next Mario game. Though if online comments are anything to go by, that might be hit and miss.

At this point, the system is bad need of a killer app that can push systems out the door. Sony’s PlayStation 4 has already surpassed the Wii U in sales, less than six months after it launched. Nintendo’s struggling console even continues to lag behind the Vita, another system accused of having no worthwhile games. We’re waiting with baited breath to see what Big N can pull our of their Tanooki Suit. We know it will be good, but will it be good enough to save the Wii U.
